Nutritional Information Gone Bad

by Heavenly Mommy on January 27, 2010

Ok, so have any of you seen the new Carl’s Jr. commercial? Kim Kardashian is eating the Cranberry, Apple, and Walnut Salad while laying seductively on her bed and then in the bath tub. Can Carl’s Jr. get any racier with their commercials? First, Paris Hilton washing a car in her bathing suit with water and soap suds everywhere. Was she even eating one of their hamburgers? I don’t remember. Then, the girl riding the bull while shoving a hamburger in her face. I’m not sure which commercial came first, but you catch my drift. Now this.

What will they think of next?

I’m not really sure I want an answer to that question.

I went to Carl’s Jr. tonight to get that particular salad. I didn’t feel like cooking tonight and I wanted something healthier than a burger and fries or a bean burrito and a taco. Not that those are my only choices, but those are my usuals. I was happy to see there was no line in the drive-thru, so I was able to quickly order my salad, pay, retrieve my food, and then be on my way.

I must say, I really liked the salad. It had a lot of leafy greens, warm chicken, feta cheese, and apples. Plus, some dried cranberries and candied walnuts on the side. It also came with a packet of Raspberry Vinaigrette dressing. I didn’t eat the walnuts, but everything else was yummy! When I looked online to see the nutritional information it said the salad has 300 calories, 11 grams of fat, 4 grams of fiber and 26 grams of protein. The way they show the information it seems that the entire salad, with the dressing, is 300 calories. They describe the salad with the dressing, so you would assume the calories are included. Take a look here for yourself.

When you dig deeper, you see in the other section that the dressing alone is 150 calories! Who are they trying to fool? Everyone, apparently. So what I’m trying to say is be very careful about what you read in those nutritional guides. You may not be taking in exactly what it says. You need to be somewhat of a detective…like Heavenly Mommy!  Now go and get that yummy salad and forget all about that nutritional mumbo jumbo!

I know! Salads at fast food places are horrible. I remember the Wendy’s salads – everyone thought they were doing thelselves a favour by avoiding a hamburger and they were actually eating MORE calories and fat than a double cheesburger! The salad dressing kills all the good stuff. Can’t win;)

I agree some salads out there are worse than a hamburger and fries! I think if you are smart about it though you can get the salad still, just don’t use the dressing and croutons!
